Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to undertake scheduled and unscheduled aircraft maintenance work safely, under routine supervision, and in compliance with work health and safety (WHS) regulations. It requires the application of WHS practices relevant to aviation maintenance workplaces in order to ensure own safety and that of others in the workplace. Work may be performed individually or as part of a team.The unit applies to WHS practices in a range of workplaces, including flight lines, aprons, hangars, and workshops. Maintenance activities include scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on fixed or rotary wing aircraft and their components. The unit is used in workplaces that operate under the airworthiness regulatory systems of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).This unit forms part of the CASA requirement for maintenance certification licences under Civil Aviation Safety Regulation (CASR) Part 66. Where a CASA licensing outcome is sought, users must refer to the licensing provisions in the MEA Aeroskills Companion Volume Implementation Guide.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Apply safe work practices
  • Identify and review regulatory and organisational policies and procedures that identify the requirements for the safe conduct of work activity detailed in the work instructions
       
Element: Identify, use and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE) according to regulatory and organisational procedures
       
Element: Identify and assess workplace hazards, and control risks within scope of own responsibility and according to organisational procedures
       
Element: Identify and apply workplace housekeeping measures according to standard organisational procedures
       
Element: Identify and observe workplace safety signs and symbols according to safety and organisational requirements
       
Element: Apply emergency procedures
  • Determine required personnel and emergency services to be contacted in the event of accident or emergency according to organisational requirements and protocols
       
Element: Identify and observe emergency and evacuation procedures to ensure safe conduct of personnel according to organisational procedures
       
Element: Use emergency equipment according to regulatory and organisational procedures
       
Element: Report workplace hazards and emergencies

Assessment Tasks
